Barbers and their trademark red and white barber poles are about as traditional in the United States as baseball and apple pie - but barbering isn't a tradition of the past, it is making a comeback - and in a big way in the United States. If you want to specialize in men's haircuts and styling, finding a barbering school that's right for you is the first step to your cutting edge career.

Many men seek a special place they can go that will concentrate on their hair and styles, that's where you will come in as a barber. Barbers almost exclusively work on male clients, although this isn't necessarily true all of the time. Women who want basic cuts sometimes also visit barbershops. Barbers are skilled at shampooing, cutting and styling hair. As a barber out of barbering school, you will also develop the skills for shaving and trimming facial hair, fitting hairpieces and offering scalp treatments. Some barbers even do some work on fingernails, as well as doing some advanced hair coloring, highlights and permanents.

In many small towns and large cities alike, the barber shop is the place to not only get your hair cut, but also to catch up on the latest happenings in and around the neighborhood, and get the latest in local and national politics. As a barber, you will not only want to have the gift to cut and style hair, affix hair pieces and maybe even do nails and offer facial hair shaves and trims, but also have the gift of gab as well. A barber school can help you learn all of the former, but the latter probably should come naturally!

You can expect a barber school to require you to have a high school diploma or GED, and do a personal interview upon entering. Once you complete a barbering school, you will most likely need to take a state exam to gain your barber's license.

Barbers Will Not Get Cut
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, barbering is a profession that is expected to grow faster than average within the next 10 years. Barbers can earn an hourly salary ranging from $7 to over $20 per hour, but many barbers go into the business with the goals of owning their own pole (or shop).

What's your ticket to this growing and exciting career? Find a barbering school in your area today and get cutting to find out when you can enroll in classes!
